These dogs come out of a breeding program that was begun in 1971 by David Leavitt, in fact another name for the old english bulldog is the Leavitt bulldog. The breed is comprised of 50% bull dog and then equal parts of bull mastiff, american bulldog, and american pitt bull. Leavitt wanted to recreate the style of bull dog that was used for bull-baiting in past centuries but without the aggressive temperament. By 1995 there were nine generations of breeding and then only old english bull dogs were bred with other old english bull dogs. These dogs have very great intelligence and by utilizing old english bulldog training they can be an all around excellent family pet. Because of their breeding background they are also healthier than most bully breeds and are not prone to the breathing problems of other types of bulldogs.
The old english bulldog is of medium size but has great strength and athleticism. The have excellent stability in movement because of their compact physic and with proper old english bulldog training can be taught to perform many tasks that can be both work-related or for fun. They have a confident disposition and are very alert and courageous dogs. Because of ther friendly and loving nature they make good family pets. However, socialization is very important as they can be prone to same-sex dog aggression and obedience training is highly recommended.
Because of their intelligence special techniques are required for old english bulldog training. They respond well to any problem-solving activities as long as you keep the training sessions to about 15 minutes as they can become easily bored. Despite their athletic build, old english bulldogs have predeliction for laziness so keep their curiosity up and the training: on a positive note, your bulldog will be happy to learn from you and will be that happy and well-trained dog that you have always wished to own.
