Interesting Information about the Old English Bulldog

Although the original breed of this name pretty much died out, David Leavitt wanted to create a new breed of Old English Bulldog that had a similar look without many of the problems that were found in this breed and other Bulldog breeds. He has succeeded in this since the dogs that have come from his breeding program now have fewer health problems than many bulldog breeds and are less aggressive than the original breed of this name. Breeding for these dogs is done naturally without artificial insemination and pups are able to be born without c-sections. As hip dysplasia is sometimes a problem, dogs with hip problems are not bred in order to minimize this issue.

The Old English Bulldog is a medium size, usually between 16 and 20 inches tall and weighing between 50 and 80 pounds. They can have coats of any different color except for merle. They have large heads and stout bodies that are muscular. These dogs have short hair and don’t need much grooming. You can expect them to live eleven years or more.

Outdoor exercise, as long as it is not extremely cold or extremely hot, is good for the Old English Bulldog. They don’t walk particularly fast and don’t need a lot of exercise, but a daily walk is a good idea. These dogs can adapt to most types of living situations. They are meant to have a happy and outgoing disposition. If these dogs are properly socialized when they are young they can be good with kids and make a good family dog. They are protective of their masters and they like to please them as much as possible.

You will want to make sure that you go to a reputable breeder in order to get your dog. These breeders will breed the Old English Bulldog first for temperament and then for health, with looks being the least important characteristic. You want to have a healthy and well behaved dog, and this is the best way to achieve this. There are unscrupulous breeders out there that are just out to make money, and these breeders won’t take as much care, so it is wise not to use them. You will want to be able to trace your dog back to the original dogs bred in this breed, and there should be no instances in the pedigree of a dog being bred with other types of dogs.
