A Good Breeder Is Essential for Finding a Purebred Dog!

The old english bulldog is a relatively new breed that has its origins back in the English Regency period of the early 19th century. In 1971 David Leavitt wanted to design a program for old english bulldog breeding that would effectively recreate the Regency style of bull-baiting dog. This would become a dog that has all the athleticism, stamina, and strength of the Regency-era bulldog but without the aggressiveness that was so paramount in the original breed. Leavitt based his breeding program on a type of cattle breeding technique to breed for the required dominant attributes of the animal. The foundation stock was comprised of 50% bulldog and the remaining percentage was made up of equal parts bull mastiff, American bulldog, and American pitt bull.

These bulldogs, also known as Leavitt bulldogs, have become well known by rare breed fanciers and have competed successfully in conformation trials of rare breeds. By old english bulldog breeding standards there are certain standards that must be conformed to such as: eyes must be brown only and the nose leather must be black. There must be no overbite and the tail must not be kinked or curly. These are some of the disqualifies for breed conformity. In order to be registered as purebreds their genetic line must be traced back to the foundation stock of David Leavitt.

There is much emphasis with the parent club for old english bulldog breeding to not only have the physical attributes such as athletic build and intelligence, but the health of the old english bulldog is vital for a breeding program to be considered successful. The fact that the old english bull dog is much healthier than many of the bully breeds is a coup for the conscientious breeder. These dogs are excellent breathers and do not suffer from the problems of other breeds of bulldogs. The Old English Bulldog Kennel Cub Inc. is progressive in their diligence to educate new breeders on the importance of selective breeding and screening for potential genetic disorders.

Good breeding also means educating on responsible training; those involved in old english bulldog breeding take that responsibility seriously. There can be a dominant streak in the breed that is very important to cure. Good breeders understand the importance of this and educate the prospective new owners on the essentials of proper training. The old english bulldog is a loving and friendly dog that needs a strong and responsible owner who can love and dicipline his dog properly. A good breeder can guide the new owner in this and all aspects of understanding this wonderful breed of dog.
